New York City:
Fashion, Cities and Cinema

Explore the role of the fashion industry in shaping the identity, culture, and economy of New York City.  Along with feminist and fashion scholar Eugenia Paulicelli (author of The Fabric of Cultures: Fashion, Identity, Globalization), students will compare New York City to other global fashion capitals and examine the role that cinema plays in shaping the fashion identity and culture of a city.  Students will take advantage of site visits in New York, a global capital of fashion, film, and the creative industries.

When will this course be offered?

  • Friday, October 26, 2018 thru Sunday, October 28, 2018

What's the class schedule?

  • Friday, October 26, 2018: Class begins at 2:00 p.m. and ends at 8:00 p.m. and will take place at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

  • Saturday, October 27, 2018: Class begins at 10:00 a.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m. Learning will take place at BMCC's Harlem Center for Continuing Education and during a field trip around the city.

  • Sunday, October 28, 2018: Class begins at 10:00 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. Learning will take place at BMCC's Harlem Center for Continuing Education and during a field trip around the city.

Upon successful completion of the course you'll earn 36 credit hours.

What's included in the tuition price?

The tuition price of $359 includes . . .

  • A public transportation pass (MetroCard) to get around New York City with your teacher

  • All costs associated with the class (there are no additional material or activity fees!)

Please note: Neither the cost of airfare to/from New York City nor accommodations are included.

Especially for Non-Locals

The holiday season is a great time of the year to be in New York!   The city’s lights, decorations, store windows, and special events make it truly magical.  This course offers you the perfect opportunity to learn about some of the things that make New York unique in all the world while experiencing it in all its holiday glory.  The course schedule provides you free time to explore the city on your own to help you focus on what interests you the most!

(Although this course is designed for students who don't live in New York City,

local students are also most welcome!)

When will this course be offered?

  • Friday, November 30, 2018 thru Sunday, December 2, 2018

  • Friday, December 7, 2018 thru Sunday, December 9, 2018

What's the class schedule?

  • Friday: Class begins at 10:00 a.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m. Learning will take place while touring lower Manhattan on foot.

  • Saturday: Class begins at 10:00 a.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m. Learning will take place in the classroom and during a field trip around the city.

  • Sunday: Class begins at 10:00 a.m. and ends at 1:00 p.m. Learning will take place in the classroom and during a field trip around the city.
