New York City’s vibrant arts and culture scene owes much to the contributions of individuals from around the globe who have fallen in love with the city and dedicated their talents to making it a creative beacon to all the world.  But more than creating beauty, many of those artistic contributions are dedicated to advancing the cause of social justice across the city, nation and globe.  The course will explore how the arts and activism interact, with classroom session enriched by visits to some of the influential destinations that reflect that interaction.

New York is known as “The City That Never Sleeps” and that’s certainly true when it comes to the creative energy that gives the city life.  That creative spirit owes much to the many immigrants who shaped New York’s past and present and who will help lead the city into the future, each of which the course will explore.  Classroom sessions will be enriched by visits to some of the cultural destinations that reflect contributions by the city’s immigrant communities.
