New York City’s vibrant arts and culture scene owes much to the contributions of individuals from around the globe who have fallen in love with the city and dedicated their talents to making it a creative beacon to all the world.  But more than creating beauty, many of those artistic contributions are dedicated to advancing the cause of social justice across the city, nation and globe.  The course will explore how the arts and activism interact, with classroom session enriched by visits to some of the influential destinations that reflect that interaction.

NYC Fashion:
Unique Style, Shared Stories

Fashion.jpeg

New York is known as one of the fashion capitals of the world. Many of the groundbreaking designs that ultimately make it to the runway during New York Fashion Week had their start in local communities throughout the City. This course will take you on an expedition of New York’s 5 boroughs, using fashion as the lens. Together with your amazing teacher and fashion anthropologist Mikaila Brown, you’ll explore the impact New York’s unique and multifaceted cultural landscape has on local fashion trends, using Harlem as a specific example.

For years, high fashion brands have come to Harlem’s iconic 125th Street to get inspired. You'll learn how fashion in Harlem has evolved, while always remaining innovative and empowering. You’ll get a chance to visit the best local boutiques and speak to pioneering fashion artisans, all while browsing the racks for clues about the neighborhood’s culture. The course ends with an examination of students’ home countries and the fashion trends that best exemplify each student’s culture.

This course is designed for students who’d like to become more familiar with New York’s unique fashion landscape. Students will also leave with a deeper, more authentic, understanding of New York’s local communities and the people who live there.

The teacher was really good and she made the class fun and useful. It was great! Well balanced learning/activity.
An amazing cultural experience. The scavenger hunt was the best part! We learned, got to the see the city and had fun!

New York is known as “The City That Never Sleeps” and that’s certainly true when it comes to the creative energy that gives the city life.  That creative spirit owes much to the many immigrants who shaped New York’s past and present and who will help lead the city into the future, each of which the course will explore.  Classroom sessions will be enriched by visits to some of the cultural destinations that reflect contributions by the city’s immigrant communities.
